As Paul waited for Silas and Timothy in Athens, he preached to the Athenians about Jesus' resurrection. He was invited to address the philosophers on Mars Hill. Paul had seen an altar to "The Unknown God." In his address, Paul proceeded to tell them about the God one can know (vs.23). How did He describe God to these philosophers?
I. Vss. 24-25 - He described God as the Creator. A. Vs. 24a- He made the world and everything in it. B. Vs, 24b - He Is the Lord of it all. C. Vs. 25 - He is not dependent on us. II. Vs. 26 - He described God as sovereign. A. He is the God of all "nations of men." B. He is in control of history. "determined the time before appointed...." C. Overall, we see that God is transcendent and has a life and being all His own apart from us. But look on: III. Vss. 27-29 - He described God as available to us. A. Vs. 27 - We can seek Him, because He is not "far from us." B. Vs. 28 - We are dependent on Him. C. Vs. 29 - He is not like the idols, who can do nothing in our lives. IV. Vss. 30-31 - He described God as the ultimate judge. A. Vs. 30 - He demands that people repent. B. Vs. 31a - He has appointed a day to judge the world. C. Vs. 31b - He will judge based on what people do about Jesus in their lives. This is an apt description of God that is meant for all generation. We still need to know the God described on Mars Hill. It is dismaying how little people today think about God and look for a Biblical description of Him.
