(This sermon idea was presented by Russell E. Spray to The Preacher's Goldmine.)
Backsliding is used the Baptist sense of the word. I. Lack of Prayer -- Luke 18:1 A. Many Christians are defeated because they fail to pray as they should. Some become too busy with temporal pursuits and neglect their prayer life. B. Others become too busy doing God's work that they neglect to pray. C. We must take and make time to pray. Prayer is our means of communication and fellowship with God. It solves problems and supplies needs. Matthew 26:41 II. Lure of Pleasure James 5:5 A. We live in a pleasure-made world. Many are seeking pleasure at any cost -- illicit sex, perversion, drunkenness, drug abuse, etc. B. Some are sacrificing their homes, marriages, families, etc. for sinful and fleeting pleasures. C. Christians must not be deceived by the lure of sinful pleasure. We must give God first place in our lives and keep our values in perspective. III. Love of Possessions Luke 12:15 A.Our affluent society has brought spiritual poverty to millions. Many have devoted their lives and labor to attaining earthly rather than heavenly treasures. B. Christians who get caught up in aspirations for money, houses, land, cars, boats and gadgets often neglect Christ and fall into temptation. C. We need to be careful that we do not get caught in such a web. Conclusion: Matthew 6:33 gives us the surest way to stay away from backsliding: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
